Jaanika Peerna
“Traces of a Sweet Connect”
GONorth Gallery, Beacon, New York
June 13 – July 5, 2009

In Zen Buddhism, the concept of satori teaches us that the enlightened self transcends the moment by becoming the moment and that to empty onself in the process of becoming is indeed the only defining path to true awareness.

In this compelling solo exhibition at the GONorth gallery in Beacon, New York, Jaanika Peerna unveils a series of new works, titled “Traces of a Sweet Connect,” that include drawing, video and a multi-faceted wall relief that could aptly be defined by what Alexander Munroe says in The Third Mind, of Alan Watts concept of satori as ‘a view of reality as abundant void and perpetual process.’

Peerna’s work has always inhabited the realms of metaphysics, movement and process. Her earlier work established a strong foundation for process-based work that in her own words, ‘has no beginning or end, no top or bottom, no reference to the scale of it all.’ In earlier drawings, Peerna scratched and etched into the paper’s surface as if excavating or chasing an unknown sound revealing multiple layers of almost phantasmagorical imagery, and unraveling layers of meaning that required complete absorption by the viewer.

In this new body of work, the artist has revealed some of those layers of space from the past in amazingly clear and thoughtful language, reminding us perhaps of what the great Zen philosopher D.T. Suzuki called ‘the art of self forgetfulness.’

The exhibition’s title “Traces of a Sweet Connect,” draws us into the artist’s view of seeing the world as a never-ending complexity of microscopic particles that traverse and build upon each other in the space that surrounds us. As Gregory Slick, the curator of this show says, ‘an encounter with her work is by turns soothing and disruptive, reverie-inducing and troubling, reactions to be expected from work that, in an essential way, deals with change.’

Peerna works by immersing herself into her space, so that her physical space becomes the surface on which she works whether it be drawing or video, thereby transcending limitations of space and time. This exhibition shows her widening her appeal with the delicacy of language and technique and her use of Mylar serves both as a deliberate stylization of this new body of work by hanging the lines off the wall as it were, as well as a prioritizing of her self into the space she inhabits whether it be contiguous or separate.

Drawing that attempts to transcribe or articulate a space very often does so by considering the space itself; Peerna’s work engulfs the space into her own consciousness to see if there is any space in which to be immersed. As seen in the show’s title work “Traces of a Sweet Connect,” three large works on Mylar each measuring 120 x 91 cm, although they were not intended as a tryptych, they nevertheless appear as such because they share the same graphic urgency and impetus.

The centerpiece of the show is a large site-specific work titled, “Traces of Light,” made from Mylar that has been cut into thin strips and pinned to the wall at various points to transform the material into a three-dimensional wall relief. These translucent strips replace the two-dimensional lines on paper and become a new vehicle for the volumetric shaping of space, sometimes reconfiguring the very notion of space and perception. This work’s use of fading lights, each timed and projected in one-minute intervals from different angles that in their duration cast complicated shadow arrangements, make the work seem both ethereal and at the same time as complicated as an impossible ball of yarn. Yet it is in this changing complexity that the artist shifts our perceptual gaze, taking us around and through the maze, and as the shadows fade from one direction to the other, we resurface with a simplicity that is graceful and exhilarating.

In the small works from “The Living Line” series, we are given an intimate view of the artist’s hand, breath and movement, that operate at a slower pace than the larger ones yet they reveal the same absorption of energy and feeling with control that suggest geological or atmospheric conditions that the artist maybe influenced by.

For all of their seriousness, Peerna is also having fun with these works. She is dancing in the midst of the chatter, guided by total immersion in the energy flowing from the graphite or water-based wax pencil she is using. It is almost as if she using a gravimeter to gauge the sensitivity of the ground on which she is working. Whether she finds herself on the other side of the worm-hole or riding an endlessly stretched line of cosmic matter Peerna realizes that she is now articulating a new paradigm.

The one video work in the show, “Lines of Light”, reveal the artist’s belief that a line is as three-dimensional as it is uniform. From a simple shaft of light coming from a window, she seized upon its reflection as it hit a clear plastic folder and directed it to move and dance as an acrobat on stage, taking the shape of a stingray, a bird, or any host of alluring images. This work perhaps more than the drawings, provide a glimpse into the artist’s thinking that every point of light can provide a cosmic field of discovery.

This show is a graceful dance with space and perception, filling the void and the silence, and discovering new serendepities for lines that though perhaps ‘done in silence’ speak loudly to the microcosms of our inner spaces and of what lies within each of us.

Although GONorth is a small gallery and this should be technically a small show, it feels extremely large, for it covers so many parameters; there’s so much presence that each work feels like a walk pushed along by the spirit of a beautiful breeze.

One feels the joy of relating to the world of ideas in Akureyri, a very cozy, civilized town of 14,000 in the north of Iceland, and the country’s second largest city. The town definitely prides itself on being an outpost of culture and creativity as well as the former home of American forces in WWII. The aim of my trip here which turned out to be very short, was to gleam into Iceland’s northern sensibility and to see Roni Horn’s work at the university. Within a short time I found myself drawn into a web of relative emotional reflection, turning my thoughts to the world of those habitual sensations that help us understand why we need our time to be measured by the fruits of our love and labour. In habitations of this size, one’s individual experiences seem to count more than in larger cities, to the extent that every little modicum of life has something to teach us, where common bonds are strengthened on the basis of efficiency, and human freedoms and frailties are accepted gracefully. At the large bookstore/cafe on the corner of the main square, this coalition of thoughts and expression are in full view as people stop by at the end of the day to rekindle personal interests in art, fashion, books or clothing, all in a robust way that reflect the Nordic sensibility of method and openness. In an evening of entertainment, at one of the city’s nightspots, The Greifinn (Green Hat), I found this inner and outer reflection expressed in a poignant synthesis by the Indie/Celtic band Thin Jim & the Castaways, http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=56548992. Life doesn’t pass one by if one is ardent enough to communicate one’s truths they seemed to tell us in their down-tempo, soulful ballads that were as much a lamentation of past hurts as songs of redemption.

At the University of Akureyri, Roni Horn’s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roni_Horn large series of photographs “Some Thames,” (2000), on the subject of water, are spread throughout the corridors and offices as an inspiring reminder of the country’s eternal, nourishing element, asking us to keep seeing what is possible in the ocean’s sustaining grace and power. The series aptly reinforces the feeling that this country and city uses water both as a practical element as well as a metaphorical symbol of wealth and nourishment. The university has strongly endorsed this theme by focusing its attention and offering higher degrees in sustainable growth and has subsequently created a program in law and social sciences that offers degrees in Polar Law. The RES-School of Renewable Energy Science, is a recognized leader in its field and though an independent institute, is associated with the university, offering advanced degrees taught entirely in English.

Akureyri’s ‘sensibility’ therefore is a fusion of educated pursuits and cultured habits that have a stronger focus than the more laissez-faire attitude found in Reykjavjk. The city’s geographical location with an ice-free harbour on the inlet of a fjord surrounded by high mountains gives it a relatively warm climate that has proven a boon to its culture and economy, and it left me a little distressed that I didn’t spend more time here or wasn’t able to visit the world’s northernmost botanical gardens. I promised myself to return!

We pour our guilt and sorrows, our joys and pleasures unto the solid earth, believing that somehow it will absolve and ameliorate our sins and purify our souls. For most, this is an automatic process derived chiefly from the addictions of an efficient and affluent world and as such, are content to be satisfied by the desire for self-gratification, reconstituting the belief that one’s own being is divinely linked to each moment in an all-knowing way. Thus gives rise the rituals of all faiths, and the anguish of all who would strive for rationalist beliefs. In my drive through Iceland’s north country from Blondous to Akureyri, I continue to ponder our complex relationship to nature and I think of Sartre’s Being and Nothingness as we cover changes in altitude and distance over unspoiled terrain that habitation has only dared witness but not tamper with. If we had to deconstruct our relationship to this landscape, we would have to bring each moment of time forward to ask as Derrida might have done, why is it not a question of our attitude toward our own thoughts and ideas that bring about our epiphanies rather than our belief in some external force which motivates us to action. In Iceland, it would seem there exist a philosophical paradox in relationship to existentialist views, but a paradox that produces benefits for both the humanist and the structuralist. Whereas the country tries to retain a modicum of formality around Lutheranism, a firm belief in pagan traditions also provide a balance between what Heidegger would have called ‘being and time,’ and what Sartre would have said is ‘the place of nothingness’ in determining the effects of one’s actions. In other words, if pagan traditions provide a structure for understanding the ‘hands off’ approach to nature, then lets leave well-enough alone!

Icelandic Sagas carry tremendous appeal in the literary world, not the least for their imaginative inventiveness, but for their power of persuasion in linking the natural tropes of folkloric traditions to the mysterious and unexplained experiences encountered on a daily basis. The fact that this small community of Skagastrond was once a thriving enclave of the herring industry, but that herring eventually became depleted from overfishing, is a tale never told to newcomers by even the most knowledgeable townspeople. Instead, everyone is told that ‘one day the fish just disappeared’ and the industry ended! It would be well accepted by science that the herring was overfished, but there was also a truism that, for one consecutive day after the next, 40 years ago, the trawlers failed to catch any fish, and hence was born another tale of the sea and its dependants. The understanding of fish migration and depletion go hand in hand and slowly in the past few years, the herring is returning to these waters. On a recent drive around Soothsayer’s mountain to the small town of Drangey, past grazing sheep on large stretches of lowland, we encountered the image of sustainability and commitment to survival by these hardy people. Giant trailer-trucks were unloading their cargo of sheep onto a conveyor belt straight for slaughter, while about 300 meters away an underwater pipe was pumping blood from the factory into the icy waters of the bay. Large flocks of seagulls flew overhead enjoying the abundance of fish in an uncanny ebb and flow of the cycle of life for both fish and farm animal. And only about 300 meters in the other direction, a fish leather factory produced the most stunning leather, pelts and rugs, sold mostly to the haute coture houses around the world.

Its true that unfamiliar territory often gives one a sense of wonder, even if the route taken is fraught with some sense of direction, and this is definitely the case in Iceland. The country is home to a meandering plethora of natural wonders, all seemingly presented in the purest, most undisturbed manner. Small rivers traverse around every mountain, and mountains themselves reveal their stark nakedness and beauty without embellishment. One is amazed at this because here one has the opportunity to concentrate on the specifics of a scene as well as the the overall panorama, which in itself is so vastly beguiling. One registers visually the rocks and gravel of riverbeds, or the bare nubby grass that cover the foothills of mountains as unique features, so that one deduces their structure and methodology as much as one is inspired by them. This sense of deductive reasoning seems to be why so many artists who encounter this place are drawn to or leave with a minimalist aesthetic, as the landscape will often induce an anthropomorphic and elemental effect. American artist Roni Horn’s work has been strongly influenced by the stark purity of Iceland.

Di Ball, the Australian performance artist and raconteur extraordinare, makes sure that all aspect of her life experience be celebrated with ‘gusto’ (remember this word), as she parades through the ‘ballpark’ of life, deflecting, absorbing and bending the slings and arrows of an outrageous ball-game! See her blogwww.theballpark.com.au/ And today October 9, happened to be Di’s Birthday so we were celebrating! We began with a party at our house with Oliver Gardiner as the chef and the rest of us pitching in to bring to fruition a tasty pasta bolognese. Di produced a bottle of Funky Llama shiraz that went well as did the other two bottles of reds provided by the rest of us. Di regaled us of her trips through the ballparks of Singapore, Turkey and other destinations and cut a perfectly small birthday cake to commemorate.

It was our plan to go to the Kantry Bar (Icelandic spelling) for the evening, but it was when we stepped outside that we realized that nature too was celebrating Di’s birthday! Wind tunnels are notorious for creating vortexes that are almost like mini tornados blowing horizontally, and this was a full on blast that made it near impossible to move. Skaagastrond had been warned of an approaching storm that was coming in from the south-east, and blowing very strong. We heeded the warning but not to the extent that we didn’t want to go outside! When we did, we got the surprise of our lives. But we hadn’t seen nothing yet, not until we were returning hours later!

It all changed on our third day, when suddenly it went from a fairly mild, hazy morning to a sudden windswept blizzard. Within a matter of two hours we were blanketed in our first snowstorm, with winds to match. We were told winter is coming early and ‘you’ve not seen nothin’ yet!’

But winter in these parts are dealt with in the same unfazed manner as the rest of the year, and its calculating effect only serves to muster one’s sense of practicality. Once over, our cameras quickly went from the ruddy ochre-green to white and the changing forms gave us new similes to ponder.

Arrived in Skagastrond, Northern Iceland on Sept 30th on a routinely crisp and cold Autumn day. Stunning scenery of straight roads bordered by ocean on one side and mountains on the other. A very serene and clean place of 650, with an air of purity and spirit of determination, situated on one of the northern peninsula fingers of this ancient island, pointing toward the Arctic Circle.

Nothing wants to be out of place here, and it seems that even in this small community, nature inhabits every empty space around every building. There are 14 residents in our group, all assembled from diverse backgrounds to co-mingle with this new character of place and wrestle with their thoughts and plans for artistic grist. At the Reykjavik bus station I am joined by Morris Orr from Northern Ireland and Renate from Brazil, and we journey on together for three more hours to Skagastrond. Although the town is small, our houses are as far as a mile apart, with the studio building in between. Our studio is an abandoned fish warehouse next to a beautiful bay buffered by giant rocks and cold blistering winds. Luckily this building like all the others are kept very warm, and once indoors the elements are distant yet we dare not forget them. As we have now become enchanted by the outdoors however, its difficult to ignore the sharp contrasts of light and landscape, heightened by the smell of pure, clean air.
